Pioneer candy making

Presented by Ranee and Randy Peterson

A machine built in 1898 that used two sets of rollers with fish molds on them, created the most delicious hard candy!

Ranee first told the story about her pioneer ancestors and how this candy press came to be in her possession...

while the sugar, water and corn syrup came to just the right temperature.

Then it was out of the pot and onto some pans for our candy mixture.

It had to cool slightly before we added the flavoring to each batch: rootbeer and strawberry/watermelon

The kids watched in fascination (and helped turn the crank) to press the candy into fish shapes.

we waited a few minutes for the candy to harden on a cookie sheet.

then we broke them apart ...

and gave everyone samples.

Ah, to be a pioneer!
